  1. Leaving early for work, 5AM, every day, earns me the distinction of being a potential client for the women and dealers of Motel 1. Evidently, any car that approaches Main from a side street wants some ‘action’. Many times I have had my window down and had women screaming at me. The dealers roam the lot of BP in the early hours and I cannot stop there for even a pop. These folks don’t cross Brookside at that hour. The Motels on our side of James keep those folks away as best they can.

i was shocked at the decayed condition of motel 1 on e. main st. as i stopped at the light, two slummy looking young girls were approaching a couple of cars in the hotel lot. this is exactly the type of low-life business that puts our whole neighborhood at tremendous risk. the crime, prostitution and drug dealing centers around this kind of place, and has for a long time. it’s time for the city to put an end to such places in the proud eastside. What bothers me about any of the motels on Main St. near Eastmoor is the fact that many sex offenders end up living there for a period of time. I’m on the list to receive notifications from the Franklin County Sheriff when sex offenders locate within a certain range of 43209 or 43213 and many times their new address is one of the motels between James and Eastmoor. For this reason, I do not allow my kids to leave the Eastmoor pool to get drinks at Speedway, nor do I allow them to go to the Wendy’s near the corner of James and Main as I have seen several prostitutes there from time to time as well. Police helicopters, police sweeps and decoys for prostitution, panhandlers & transients are symptoms of the sad conditions found at this important intersection. Net result is a deterioration of the area with Motel 1 at the hub. When it was closed, much of the illegal activity dropped off. When the police department intensifies their efforts in this area, the illegal activity drops off. Motel 1 should be demolished.

I live less than a block away on South Everett Ave, So i drive by Motel One several times a week and can not believe that the city can’t seem to see all of the issue with Motel One in it’s deterioration and decay.
The outside is such a eyesore for our neighborhood, cinder bocks holding down plastic and traps on the roofs, dangling electical cord, crumbling walkways, black mold, cracks in the foundation, over grown weeds and trees, half of the windows are boarded up, vines growing through the walls and roof. If this was your house it would be comdemed!
So why has Motel One been able to stay open is beyond me.
We see the crime, prostitution and drug dealing centered around this place, We get sex offenders registration cards who live in Motel One and the appartments also owned by the owner of Motel One just behind the motel.
We see the prostitues being picked up in front of our home a half block away.

I not only want Motel One closed down, I want this building torn down. It is a nightmare waiting to happen, it is a fire trap! It’s a death trap. But worst of all a ower who is non compliant with the law.

Who do you think is being payed off on this one???

  7. Michael Piper says:

I don’t think anyone is being paid off the owner just knows all the loopholes in the city to get around everything.
He owns over 30 properties in the Columbus area, which include 4 motels, several appartments, and a rash of houses. He know the laws all to well.

What the pictures show are many building code violations.. To look the other way on this one subjects the occupant to mold and health problems that could kill him or her. The City inspectors have a duty to issue orders to eliminate conditions, forthwith, that endanger life . So once the City had been put on notice, which Scott’s letter did, then the problem should have been solved that day or the building vacated. This did not seem to happen. Why???

Hi Jim, I am President of Peacekeepers Block Watch. Motel One is right here in our block watch boundaries and no one wants it out of here more than we do. I have been working with a certain person at the City Atty. office for over a year now on the issues we have with Motel One. I spoke to her last week and even though it may not look like it, the city is making progress. All reports about the motel have been sent to the State of Ohio who issues licenses for motels. They have a hearing coming up. I have asked if the public can attend the hearing, she will be letting me know. If we can, it will be imperative that we ALL show our support in getting this eye sore and haven for crime out of our community. You can contact me at pr2456@yahoo.com

Hey Pam , good to meet you.. As a teen ager I use to rent rooms at what was then called the 40 Winks to have a place to drink a few beers.. That was 55 years ago..It was a broken down trap at that time.. Its now called Motel One. So much for the prospect of denying a permit to operate. The pictures that Scott Huggins took show a very serious situation that needs attention NOW.. The City Atty. you are working with should have seen the need to have a mold test made after the letter was sent to her. Her boss , Rick Pieffer, is a do it now type of guy..not a kick the can down the road City Atty…It looks to me that the Asst City Atty. did not let her boss know what the situation was as to the health hazard for the occupant of the room in the picture. Ingesting mold is bad for your future , to say the least.. Once I saw the pictures I felt an obligation to help Scott Huggins in trying to save this person from a certain lung problem ..Thank God Scott had enough guts to go into the room to try to help the occupant..at the occupant’s request.. When some one cries for help … its expected in our society to get the person help.. not next month but right now.. No more delay .. Its time for the City to act NOW…or else it waives its right to defend their action , or lack thereof , in Court.

Motel One is an eye sore and a health hazard to those living there. On the day of our protest in front of Motel One, many of the residents came out. Most were elderly, teens and one suffering from mental health issues. The motel owner is making money on the backs of the least able to care for themselves. We need to close the motel but the city also needs to find safe housing for the residents.

I think everyone has agreed that Scott’s pictures of the Vet’s Motel One unit with its ceiling falling down have presented a great need for action on the part of the City and /or the State Fire Marshal’s office. What must bother anyone who has viewed the pictures is how could this have gotten so far down the road with action from some government agency?? We do not want the Vet . to end up like the family who burned up over the holidays as no one had the job of checking on the houses to make sure everyone was safe.. Mayor Coleman take notice.. Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way.. Jim.

I think everyone should be grateful that City Attorney Rick Pfeiffer attended the January 19, 2012 meeting at Wings. Mr. Pfeiffer was straight forward in his advice that the taking of a business or property requires proof of wrong doing . He agreed to look into the Motel One issue to see if a remedy was available to help solve the issue. He brought two of his Asst. Atty’s with him, one of which was assigned to co-ordinate the City’s efforts with the State Fire Marshal’s office and the neighborhood organazations. Mr. Pfeiffer left the meeting with the best interest of our neighborhoods on his front burner. Thanks to City Attorney Rick Pfeiffer who puts people before politics. He is willing to stick his neck out for us , so we need to support his efforts . Jim
