The police must know what has happened and who did it if there is ever a chance to
solve the crime. Also, for our neighborhood alerts, accuracy in the details is
also important. Earlier in the summer, I received notice that a white male, about
5’10”, with dark hair and a green truck was causing problems. This is a good
start, but more information is needed because the description of the person
describes a lot of people.
These things are hard to think of on the fly, but usually there is
something that stands out. This can help the police catch the suspect, or link
that person to other crimes and descriptions. How do they walk, talk, gestures,
escape patterns are all things you can see.
Another important item is to be organized. After you call the police, start writing
notes. What happened. When. By whom. Where did they go. How did they do that.
If the event happened and you saw nothing, jot down what you do know. Ask your
neighbors. What time frame. You should use complete sentences. This helps with organization.
